A Lesson on getting Unplugged
Are we too connected? Are you reading this?
A few weeks ago I was in Philadelphia for a RE Bar Camp. As always I learned a ton, meeting new people and getting to see old friends.
Now, usually people associate Bar Camp with people who are so plugged into the technology side of Real Estate that we never actually meet anyone other than in a virtual world. Well, sometimes that’s true. But, because of Bar Camps I have had an opportunity to meet some pretty amazing people, who, because we are in the right setting, can share some pretty amazing things.
Two of these people are Derek Massey and Bill Lublin; and what they shared hit me like a ton of bricks. They basically said something that I had been feeling for some time now but had not yet verbalized: that in an effort to be the ultimate in responsiveness we are damaging relationships with those we choose to spend time with.
What it comes down to is this – whether it’s our family, or a client, or whomever, if we look at our iphone or droid every time time it buzzes we damage a connection with the person in front of us – do we not?
In other words, I’m addicted to the damn thing.
Now being addicted gives the connotation that I do not have control. I will not accept that. I have it. Last weekend, I turned off my iphone on Friday night, checked my email Saturday night after my kids were asleep, and repeated the pattern on Sunday (I got my voice mail through Google Voice). You know what? It felt great.
But it’s not just the holstered phones we carry that makes us like some digital outlaw six-shooter renegades.
It’s not the stuff on the phones: email, Twitter, Facebook, and Four Square that make us addicts. It’s that we use these tools while in the presence of those we love most.
Think about it…connecting with strangers over connecting with your child, husband, wife, etc.
My wife recently told me that every time I reach for my buzzing iphone my daughter looks dejected. It made me sick.
So I admit it – I’m an addict. And it’s just as serious as all the other addictions because it hurts people I love.
And on this Father’s Day Eve I choose to stop it.
I hope you will too.
The Real Estate conventions that matter
Choosing the right Real Estate convention is hard…but this should help
Last week I had dinner with a few of social networking peeps and I soon discovered some sage advice from some of those I most respect. Who are these peeps? They are people who are so connected on the nation wide scene that it always amazes me that I am cool enough to be in a room with them.
In any event, the conversation at one point turned to conventions and which ones to attend. After all, money is tight and you can’t go to everything. So, with that said, here is a quick overview:
1. REBarcamps:
Having attended 5 REbarcamps in the last year of various sizes I will tell you nothing has effected me more than REBarcamps. They have openned my mind to a world that I dod not know existed, and have allowed me to meet people from all over the country that have truly impacted me and how I do business. For the first time in my real estate life, REBarcamps connected me the kind of people that not only want to share but have the capacity and experience to give information of value. SO, if you have never been to one GO. Nothing will help you more. To find out more go to http://rebarcamp.com/
By the way…Barcamps are FREE!!!
2. RETechSouth:
For the record, I have not been to one, but, my peeps tell me that there is nothing more impactful than this conference. It is the kind of can’t miss event that only comes around once a year – and since they told me about it last week, I have done nothing but cry over my bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. If you are anyone in the Real Estate Social Networking world you go to this thing.
Don’t believe me? Just look at their speakers…http://www.retechsouth.com/speakers/ Impressive!!!
3. Inman:
Okay, so the grandaddy of them all when it comes to this kind of thing. Everyone goes. It’s a great party. The problem is expense. But if you are looking for content and structure, this is the event for you. However, the best part about Inman is the after party.

by Darrin Friedman
It is my pleasure to officially announce that the Coldwell Banker Chevy Chase is adding our name to the list of sponsors for RE Bar Camp Atlantic City. For those of you have never been to a bar camp, let me explain the significance…
The What: Officially – RE Bar Camp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.
My Take: There has not been a more significant component to my growth this last year than attending Bar Camps (this will be my 4th).Why go? Because this is an amazing opportunity to meet people just like you who just get it. It is simply everything good about what our industry should be. It’s about sharing, learning, and making relationships you never otherwise would have made.
So, without further ado, here are the details…
